The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu  Experiences Hurricanes and Blizzards in Climatic Wind Tunnel

Before the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Turbo makes it's way to Jeff Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington North Carolina, engineers subject it to extreme conditions in a climatic wind tunnel that can simulate hurricanes, blizzards, and 140-degree heat.


The facility allows engineers to test vehicles like the new Malibu Turbo in extreme climates year round without ever leaving Warren, Michigan.

By replicating various conditions, the climatic wind tunnel has influenced the design of Malibu Turbo details like its cooling system and how well the AC will work in places with high heat and humidity, like the Gulf Coast.

Temperatures inside the climatic wind tunnel can range from -40 degrees up to 140 degrees, and the facility can simulate dry or humid ambient air or produce rain and snow. An in floor dynamometer allows testing at speeds up to 155 mph or while under a load such as towing or climbing a mountain pass.

The Malibu Turbo’s engine intake system was tested in blizzard-like conditions to ensure water and snow was not ingested while allowing plenty of air in for the turbocharged engine. Likewise, the Chevrolet’s engine and transmission cooling systems were tested in extreme heat situations to make sure they could handle different driving conditions.

According to GM, the climatic wind tunnel saves the company the time and money necessary to ship cars and people to remote locations, and lets the engineers gain complete control over the environmental conditions. After tests with the climatic wind tunnel are complete, engineers take the vehicles to actual harsh environments to verify their results.

The exterior of the all new 2013 Malibu Eco has also been redesigned to increase efficiency. With a more aerodynamic shape, an eco gauge, more efficient wheels, and new aero grille shutters the fuel-efficient 2013 Malibu Eco becomes even more fuel efficient. The aero grille shutters guide airflow around the vehicle body, helping increasing fuel efficiency by decreasing resistance. 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Sales Increase 50% In March

The Chevrolet Malibu was the star of March sales. Deliveries of the new Malibus, which started hitting sales floors in February, surged 53.6 percent in March to 23,887.

Those results made the vehicle, produced at General Motors Co.’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, the company’s top-selling car in March, surpassing the Chevrolet Cruze for the first time in several months. The Malibu now is one of the nation’s best selling cars.

March Best Month Ever For High mpg Chevrolets

General Motors Co. released sales figures Monday confirming that its 12 vehicles getting 30 mpg or better on the highway will have combined U.S. sales of 100,000 or more for March — its highest ever monthly total for the automaker.

"GM's strategic investments in four-cylinder and turbocharged engines, advanced transmissions and vehicle electrification have been very well timed," Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, said in a statement. "Three years ago, about 16 percent of the vehicles GM sold achieved at least 30 mpg on the highway. Today, that number is about 40 percent and we have more new fuel-economy leaders on the way, including the Chevrolet Spark"

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco introduces eAssist, cutting-edge technology that makes it possible for the vehicle to conserve power when it’s not needed. With eAssist the new Malibu Eco captures energy that will help support the power train and allow the vehicle to use gas only when needed. This increase in efficiency gives the new Malibu Eco an EPA rated estimated fuel economy of 37 miles per gallon on the highway. With regenerative braking, what would have been lost power during braking is now captured and converted to electricity that helps to keep the lithium-ion battery pack charged. The stored energy is then used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during numerous driving scenarios such as under heavy acceleration or climbing up a steep hill. While the vehicle is stopped the engine also cuts off and the battery-powered generator powers accessories preserving fuel during times of bumper to bumper traffic, stuck at a red light, or coasting down hill. The new eAssist system is engineered for proficiency and gives the all new 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco its boost in mpg.
The exterior of the all new 2013 Malibu Eco has also been redesigned to increase efficiency. With a more aerodynamic shape, an eco gauge, more efficient wheels, and new aero grille shutters the fuel-efficient 2013 Malibu Eco becomes even more fuel efficient. The aero grille shutters guide airflow around the vehicle body, helping increasing fuel efficiency by decreasing resistance. The shutters also electronically close when there is no need for engine-cooling. When engine-cooling is necessary the shutters will open automatically using only electricity. The efficient wheels us low rolling resistance tires making the Malibu Eco drive more effortlessly while using less force, preserving energy and therefore fuel.
The redesign of the all new 2013 Malibu Eco did not overlook the interior. The 2013 Malibu offers more passenger comfort and space compared to its predecessors. Interior comfort is also enhanced through ambient lighting and sport-sculptured seats. Acoustic laminated glass and triple door seals help keep noise outside the vehicle and create a quiet and peaceful environment in the passenger cabin.

7 Simple Steps To Improve The Fuel Efficiency of Your Vehicle

In this age of painful increasing gas prices, improving the fuel efficiency of our vehicles is on everyone’s mind. Trading in that gas guzzler is an obvious solution, Chevy offers five vehicles with 37mpg fuel rating or better. However, not everyone can afford to invest in a new vehicle. With this in mind, here are seven easy tips for improving the fuel efficiency of your vehicle–and saving money at the pump:

1. Slow Down - Making your fuel last longer can be as simple as driving at a slower speed. Statistics show that driving at 55 mph rather than 75 mph can increase your fuel efficiency by 20 percent or more. So slow down and take it easy!
2. Keep Your Tires Inflated To The Correct Air Pressure - Your vehicle owners manual will give you information on what the correct tire pressure should be for your vehicle. Keeping your tires inflated to the maximum allowable pressure can improve the fuel efficiency by between 2 and 4 percent.
3. Change Your Oil on a Regular Schedule - Regularly maintainence including changing the oil can help your car run more efficiently and improve fuel mileage. Also, using the correct grade of oil will improve efficiency by 1 to 2 percent. Check your vehicles owners manual to find the oil type and grade recommended for your vehicle
4. Replace The Air Filter - The air filter is a vital part of your vehicle–it allows your engine to “breathe” healthily by filtering out dirt and foreign particles. Replacing the air filter can improve fuel economy by up to 10 percent, so change it as often as your vehicles owners manual suggests. By changing the air filter on a regular basis, you can save you up to 35 cents per gallon.
5. Remove Excess Weight - According to studies, for every 100 pounds of extra weight in your vehicle, your fuel mileage decreases by 2 percent. Clean out your trunk and back seat and boost your fuel efficiency.
6. Don’t Idle Your Engine - If you’re going to be waiting for an extended period of time, switch off your engine and save.
7. Use Cruise Control - If your car has cruise control, be sure to use it. Continuously speeding up and slowing down can decrease the overall fuel economy of your vehicle. Using cruise control keeps your car at a constant speed which increases your mpg.
