Newly redesigned with technology to increase fuel efficiency, the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco is a leading vehicle in the mid size sedan segment.

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco introduces eAssist, cutting-edge technology that makes it possible for the vehicle to conserve power when it’s not needed. With eAssist the new Malibu Eco captures energy that will help support the power train and allow the vehicle to use gas only when needed. This increase in efficiency gives the new Malibu Eco an EPA rated estimated fuel economy of 38 miles per gallon on the highway. With regenerative braking, what would have been lost power during braking is now captured and converted to electricity that helps to keep the lithium-ion battery pack charged. The stored energy is then used to deliver an electric boost to the engine during numerous driving scenarios such as under heavy acceleration or climbing up a steep hill. While the vehicle is stopped the engine also cuts off and the battery-powered generator powers accessories preserving fuel during times of bumper to bumper traffic, stuck at a red light, or coasting down hill. The new eAssist system is engineered for proficiency and gives the all new 2013 Chevy Malibu Eco its boost in mpg.

The exterior of the all new 2013 Malibu Eco has also been redesigned to increase efficiency. With a more aerodynamic shape, an eco gauge, more efficient wheels, and new aero grille shutters the fuel-efficient 2013 Malibu Eco becomes even more fuel efficient. The aero grille shutters guide airflow around the vehicle body, helping increasing fuel efficiency by decreasing resistance. The shutters also electronically close when there is no need for engine-cooling. When engine-cooling is necessary the shutters will open automatically using only electricity. The efficient wheels us low rolling resistance tires making the Malibu Eco drive more effortlessly while using less force, preserving energy and therefore fuel.

Moms And Female Engineers Helped GM Redesign The All New 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Behind the scenes, in wind tunnels, design studios, labs and on the test track, General Motors Co. engineers have been working the past few years to develop the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu

To get the vehicle just right, GM asked four of its female engineers — and several moms also — to help redesign the all new 2013 Malibu. The popular family car will be sold not just here in the U.S., but around the world in nearly 100 countries.

Women buy slightly more than half of cars in the U.S. and participate in 80 percent of family car-buying decisions, according to industry statistics. So GM turned to the experts on family cars, the women who purchase and drive them.

The new 2013 Malibu, GM's first global midsize sedan, has special design touches from women engineers who ensured the plethora of child safety seats work in the vehicle, helped increase fuel economy and made it significantly quieter so moms — and dads — can hear their children in the backseat.

And some of these engineers aren't who you might expect. Single mom and aerodynamics development engineer Suzanne "Suzy" Cody and a colleague spent over 400 hours in the wind tunnel at the Warren Tech Center to reduce drag on the car. Cody, who sports blue hair and in her spare time laces up roller skates to compete as "Shovey Camaro" with the Bath City Roller Girls, led efforts to make the car more slippery through the wind, which helped gain 2.5 mpg in highway driving over the Malibu's predecessor. As a mother of two young boys, Cody said fuel economy is important to her and she knows how important it is to families. "You're worried about money, and when you can do small things to a car like shape the exterior, it doesn't cost the program any money to have the right exterior shape because you do it far enough in advance," she said. "You can affect the car in a way that doesn't cost the company any money, but saves the consumer money in the long run."

The all new 2013 Malibu also uses new materials to help it earn the Malibu's quietest title to date. Materials were placed behind the instrument panels, in panels, doors and in carpet to absorb noise. The Malibu also uses acoustic laminated glass to cut noise from big semis that zip by and interrupt conversations with kids, said Kara Gordon, a vehicle performance engineer for noise and vibration acoustics. "We've got voice-recognition technologies, we've got all this stuff we've loaded into the car and if it's not quiet enough, it won't work," said Gordon, who spent hours in a lab listening to Malibu noise recordings.

The 2013 Malibu Eco, which features eAssist technology to boost fuel economy to 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway, is already on sale, with a starting price tag of $25,995.

Efficient Driving Tips

Slow Down - Gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.Limit Idling - Idling for 15 minutes can burn 1/4 gallon of fuel.

Drive Sensibly - Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town.

Use Cruise Control - Using cruise control on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.

Use the Right Oil - Because oil reduces engine friction and friction makes an engine work harder, using the manufacturer's recommended grade of oil improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.

Plan and Combine Trips - Combining errands into one trip saves time and money. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm.

Hybrid Technology - Use a combination of battery power and gas engine for propulsion.
Direct Injection - Injects fuel directly into the combustion chambers to ensure the precise amount of fuel is used at the precise moment it is needed for improved fuel economy.
Variable Valve Timing - Improves fuel economy and performance by controlling intake and exhaust valve openings so that it occurs at the optimum moment, increasing efficiency across the entire operating range of the engine.
6-speed Transmissions - Offer more gear ratios to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range.
Active Fuel Management - Engine management system that enables the engine to automatically operate on half its cylinders under light load conditions, improving fuel efficiency and reducing fuel consumption (V8).

Gasoline powered generator extends total range to more than 370 miles.

CRUZE ECO10% Aerodynamic improvement over non-Eco models - Lowered ride height, active aerodynamic shutters on lower grille and minimized turbulence with underbody panels and an aero decklid spoiler.
Weight reduction - The Eco weighs 214 pounds less than the Cruze 1LT.
Powertrain modifications - On the Eco equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the 6th gear is set-up for ultra high efficiency.
Manual transmission models return a best-in-class 42 mpg highway, the best highway mileage of any gasoline engine in America.
Vehicles with a manual transmission can travel more than 500 highway miles between fill-ups. The automatic has more fuel capacity and gets a range of over 580 highway miles.

MALIBUA 6-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models for 2011.
Every 4-cylinder Malibu has a fuel economy rating of 22 city/33 highway mpg - better highway fuel economy than a comparable Toyota Camry.
Gets more than 500 highway miles between fill-ups.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu Sales Increase 50% In March

The Chevrolet Malibu was the star of March sales. Deliveries of the new Malibus, which started hitting sales floors in February, surged 53.6 percent in March to 23,887.

Those results made the vehicle, produced at General Motors Co.’s Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, the company’s top-selling car in March, surpassing the Chevrolet Cruze for the first time in several months. The Malibu now is one of the nation’s best selling cars.
