NADAguides.com, the leading online provider of new and used vehicle pricing and information, today announced that the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has been awarded the NADAguides “Car of the Year.”

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze has beat out 10 other strong contenders that were eligible for this award based upon performance, impressive styling and design, fuel ratings, safety features and cost of ownership all at a very competitive price point.

In a recent online consumer poll held by NADAguides.com, the Chevrolet Cruze led the consumers’ choice for the Car of the Year race by registering 33 percent of the votes, with the 2011 Ford Explorer and 2011 BMW 5-Series in the number two and three spots respectively among consumer votes.

NADAguides.com analysts also took notice as the Chevrolet Cruze consumer shopping and research interest continued to increase month over month throughout the course of a ten month period. In addition, consumer interest and research from January through October 2011 for the Chevrolet Cruze on NADAguides.com greatly overpowered that of fellow Car of the Year contenders.

Troy Snyder, Director of Product Development for NADAguides will present Cristi Landy, Director, Chevrolet Small Car marketing with the NADAguides Car of the Year award at the Chevrolet booth at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 16.

“This aspirational compact has done phenomenal things for the reemergence of the GM brand in the global marketplace by bringing technology, design and performance to this segment at an elevated level versus its competitors. The Cruze provides domestic auto shoppers with a new, higher level of options and sophistication not previously seen and we are very excited to see this vehicle so successfully push the envelope for this segment ” said Troy Snyder, Director of Product Development for NADAguides.

“The NADAguides.com Car of the Year award validates what our customers already know: the Cruze offers fantastic value. It combines comfort, fuel economy and safety in a stylish package. With over one million sold globally, the Cruze redefines the small car”, added Cristi M. Landy, Director, Chevrolet Small Car Marketing.

Lordstown Builds 300,000th Cruze

The General Motors Co. Lordstown Complex passed another milestone Thursday when the 300,000th Chevrolet Cruze rolled off the assembly line since production began in mid-July 2010 - and workers will work more overtime to keep up with demand.

The crystal claret - or deep reddish - car, which is headed for a Fort Worth, Tex., Chevrolet dealership, was built early Thursday morning on the third shift, complex spokesman Tom Mock said. "That's quite an accomplishment," he said of the production total.
He added production "is really accelerating." Three ovetime shifts are scheduled for Oct. 22, subject to change, he said.

The plant aims to build about 1,200 cars over three shifts each day.
Even with strong production, workers aim for high quality, a union leader said.
"Three hundred thousand is a large number, but our members know quality comes before quantity. Whether it's 300,000 or one million, we want to make sure they're done right," said Dave Green, president of United Auto Workers Local 1714 of the Lordstown West Metal Center.

Jim Graham, president of Local 1112 at the Lordstown East assembly plant, said the plant reached the 300,000 mark quickly because of three shifts, which were not always in effect when workers were building previous cars such as the Cobalt and Cavalier.

The Cruze, which has seen its field supply fall to 33 days at the current sales rate - about half of the 60 considered ideal - posted five straight months of 20,000 sales in the spring and summer.
It hit a high of 24,896 sales in June as rising gasoline prices made consumers more fuel-conscious. The car's highway miles per gallon is rated at 35 for the base LS automatic transmission to 42 for the manual transmission Eco model.

The complex, which employs about 4,500 hourly and salaried workers, has stepped up production, reaching 28,911 cars in August and 27,284 in September.

Jeff Gordon Chevrolet has over 100 Chevrolet Cruze available and special arrangements have been made for customers to color & option available Chevrolet Cruze currently in production.

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco with manual transmission delivers an exceptional 42 miles per gallon on the highway. City mileage is 28 mpg. That means this not-a-diesel, uses-no-hydrogen and doesn’t-have-a-hybrid-battery-pack Chevy gets better fuel highway economy than the current Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid

The entire Cruze line looks and feels rich and well finished. Especially because the Cruze Eco version rides on a slightly lowered suspension (for aerodynamics) and has unique lightweight 17-inch aluminum wheels (for low rolling resistance), the highest-mileage Cruze is also one of the best-looking small Chevys.

The engine is a modern 138-horsepower Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don’t let the turbo scare you, or the fact that the engine is only 85 cubic inches. Modern turbochargers are exponentially more reliable and durable than those of the 1980s and 1990s. More importantly, small engines are becoming mainstream. Thankfully, turbos help them deliver the power of larger engines

The Cruze Eco easily scoots from zero to 60 mph in around 10 seconds, which – when compared to most hyper-efficient cars – isn’t too shabby. While there is some minor turbo lag, it isn’t significant, and it’s certainly nothing like it used to be in the old days when you could count to “two-Mississippi” before anything would happen after you floored the accelerator.

The six-speed manual also does its part in the mileage equation. The top three gears (fourth through sixth) are all special gas-saving ratios.

Improved aerodynamics also enhance the Cruze’s mileage. While you can’t see them from the outside of the car, the Cruze Eco has shutters that open and close behind the grille. Sensors know when to shut them to reduce aerodynamic drag and add as much as one-quarter mpg. While that doesn’t sound like much, every little bit helps.

The fact that weight-saving efforts pulled 125 pounds out of the Cruze Eco (compared to a similarly equipped non-Eco mode) helps efficiency and the Cruze’s handling.

Designed to go head to head with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus, when it comes to cabin and cargo space the Eco is the clear leader. A seeming small amount of extra space makes a noticeable difference in compact cars. Passenger volume for the Cruze is 95 cubic feet, besting the Honda Civic’s 91 cubic feet, the Toyota Corolla’s 92 cubic feet and the 93 cubic feet in the Ford Focus. Trunk volume, at 15.4 cubic feet, also bests the competition

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Starts A Revolution

The Chevrolet Cruze is no doubt one of the best designs to have come out of the assembly line of General Motors (GM) and the result is beginning to manifest across the world

The Cruze is giving the Japanese car makers every reason to worry especially here in America where the Cruze has powered to top of the passenger car sales charts.

The Cruze, cruised past perennial chart-toppers like the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic and may likely remain there for a long time. This is what the American models have not been able to do for many years and the Cruze seems to have started a revolution in the passenger car segment.

“Chevrolet Cruze continues to redefine the compact segment, offering class-leading standard safety features, upscale amenities – as well as hybrid-like fuel economy without the price,” said Mark Santilli, Marketing Manager at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet. “The Cruze Eco is in a league of its own and will challenge perceptions of the efficiency available in a more affordable non-hybrid.”

Jeff Gordon Chevrolet recently made special arrangements for customers to color & option available 2012 Chevrolet Cruze currently in production.

The Cruze Is Hitting On All Cylinders As March Cruze Sales Exceed 18,000

Cruze sales totaled 18,018 in March and General Motors said Chevy Cruze sales exceeded 50,000 during the first quarter of 2011.

Fueled by over 18,000 vehicles shipped to dealers last month, the Lordstown, Ohio -built upscale compact vehicle surged to the top of the GM car chart in the first quarter of the year at 50,205, the automaker said Friday

The total paled next to the 92,445 sales posted by Chevy's Silverado 1500 pickup truck, but it returned the Lordstown Ohio Complex to its glory days of producing GM's top-selling car after years of trailing the fullsize Chevrolet Impala and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The Impala was a close second in sales for the quarter at 49,541, while the Malibu was third at 48,745, but the Cruze is expected to be Chevy's top seller by year's end, Don Johnson, GM's vice president of U.S. sales, said on a conference call.

About half of Cruze sales in March were "conquest" sales - luring buyers from competing models, such as perennial segment leaders Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, GM said. "The Cruze is helping us keep customers and bring in new ones," Johnson said.

The Cruze also sold better than the Cobalt in California and other states where GM normally finds it hard to win small-car buyers, Chevrolet Vice President of Sales and Service Alan Batey said.

In addition, Cruze sales came at an average transaction price close to $19,000, which was $2,000 above the Civic and $3,000 above the Corolla, Batey said. "That tells you customers are putting more options in the vehicle," Johnson said.

Johnson credited the Cruze for helping GM double its share to 11.4 percent from 5.7 percent of the compact car market, which he called the fastest-growing segment. "With oil hovering around $105 (a barrel,) we see a bit of a shift to compact cars," he said, adding the higher oil price isn't causing customers to delay purchases. "We think the economy will stay on its current course of slow, steady recovery."

The Lordstown Ohio Complex, which launched the Cruze Sept. 8 as GM's brightest hope hit a new production high for the car of 26,353 units. It built 22,618 in February and 22,314 in January.

Jeff Gordon Chevrolet recently placed an order for 100 Chevrolet Cruze and special arrangements have been made for customers to color & option available Chevrolet Cruze currently in production.

The American Made Car You've Always Wanted Has Arrived
The 42 mpg Chevy Cruze

The Chevy Cruze is a World Class American Made car you can be proud to own. When you buy American, you help to keep our economy strong, and you show your support for American workers. The Cruze is already Chevrolet’s top-selling car worldwide.
The most obvious reason to buy American made products is quite simply to keep American's working, when you buy products made in the USA it helps keep American workers employed, it helps American businesses stay in business, and helps the economy. Every U.S. and Canadian version of the Cruze is built in Lordstown, Ohio.
Chevrolet invested $350 million in this location to assure this American car would be produced right here at home.
ENGINE BLOCKS Made in Defiance, Ohio
The Cruze is powered by 1.4L and 1.8L turbo Ecotec engines, part of a new generation of highly-efficient, small-displacement, four-cylinder engines. General Motors invested $59 million in the Defiance Foundry to retool the facilities and equipment for the production of these engines. The plant now employs 1,346 workers. The Ecotec engines are built on a strong, low-mass foundation that supports high fuel efficiency. The cylinder blocks are made of gray cast-iron with five reinforced main bearings. To minimize weight, the block has a hollow-frame construction that makes it about 20 percent lighter than conventional casting. The block also incorporates a gray cast-iron bedplate that reduces engine vibration. The cylinders in the block are triple-honed to minimize friction and wear and optimize oil and fuel consumption.
SIX-SPEED TRANSMISSIONS Made in Toledo, Ohio
General Motors has invested $350 million in new equipment for its Toledo Powertrain Center to manufacture six-speed front-wheel-drive transmissions that go in both the Cruze and the Malibu. Both the automatic and manual six-speed transmission available in the Cruze are to improve the car’s fuel-economy and engine performance. The six-speed automatic transmission — standard in the Cruze LT and LTZ models — is designed to bolster engine power. The automatic transmission has an on- axis design — the gear sets are on the same axis as the engine centerline — that enhances the car’s interior space and gives it a lower hood line. The six-speed manual transmission — standard in the Cruze LS and the Cruze Eco — delivers a wide set of gear ratios. The manual transmission includes triple-cone synchronization in first and second gears for easier engagement, and a synchronized reverse gear.
STAMP METAL PRODUCTS, Made in Parma, Ohio
GM’s Parma Metal Center is stamping 49 different parts for the Cruze, including many of the car’s critical structural components. In the past year, the company has spent $60 million on new equipment and machine upgrades at the plant, including the installment of new robotic welding lines. The plant, which employs about 1,450 workers, now uses five high-speed progressive systems and 13 transfer presses to produce many of the smaller parts used in GM cars. The plant is on target to produce 58.9 million parts this year, up from about 28 million produced in 2009.
ALLOY WHEELS, Made in Cleveland, Ohio
Alcoa Automotive Wheel, a division of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products, will provide the aluminum alloy wheels that will be standard on the Cruze Eco model that will be released in the fourth quarter. Production of wheels will take place at the company’s Cleveland Works facility that employs about 1,000 people. Alloy wheels are lighter than cast aluminum wheels, which helps reduce fuel consumption. The Cruze Eco model will come equipped with light-weight 17-inch forged aluminum wheels. The wheels are said to weigh less than 18 pounds, about 20 percent less than comparable cast aluminum wheels. The wheels are designed to help the Eco achieve an average 40 miles to the gallon. Alcoa says that the reduction in the car’s unsprung weight also will improve the Cruze’s handling and overall performance. The wheels will also be available on the Cruze 2LT and LTZ models.
SEATING, Made in Lordstown, Ohio
Magna International’s Lordstown Seating, the company that supplied seating systems for the Chevy Cobalt, is supplying the seats for the Cruze. Magna is among 18 tier-one suppliers in Ohio that are supplying parts for the Cruze. Other local suppliers include Comprehensive Logistics and Jamestown Industries in Youngstown and Falcon Transport in Austintown. The seating systems are part of an interior refinement strategy that aims to set the Cruze apart from other cars in the compact segment. Standard six-way power driver’s seats, leather seating surfaces and heated seats are included in the Cruze 2LT and LTZ models.

Chevy Cruze Eco Achieves Segment-Leading 42 MPG On The Highway
The official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco are in and they’re good. Segment-leading good. It delivers EPA-estimated 42 mpg on the highway (manual transmission models), with equally impressive city fuel economy of 28 mpg.
The Cruze is already Chevrolet’s top-selling car worldwide this year, with more than 165,000 sold, and second only to the Silverado full-size pickup for all Chevrolet vehicles– even before sales began in the United States.
Cruze Eco’s highway fuel economy beats non-hybrid segment competitors – including 23 percent greater highway fuel economy than the Honda Civic – as well as the Ford Fiesta subcompact and many hybrid models. In fact, it’s better than Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid.
The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge).
To achieve its segment-leading fuel economy, Cruze’s engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements.
The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car’s overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models. “Chevrolet left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed,” said Santilli. “Their engineers were comprehensive and thorough when it came to evaluating and modifying the aspects of the car’s performance that contribute to fuel economy.”
Aerodynamic improvements over non-Eco manual-transmission models contributed approximately 6 mpg to the Cruze’s EPA-estimated 42 mpg highway fuel economy. Many were developed and refined in more than 500 hours of wind-tunnel testing of the Chevy Volt, which shares a core architecture with the Cruze.
Examples include the upper grille, which has more “closeouts” to improve aerodynamics, a lower front air dam extension, a rear spoiler, a lowered ride height and underbody panels that smooth airflow beneath the car.
The Eco model also features an all-new technology in the compact segment: a lower front grille air shutter that closes at higher speeds to reduce aerodynamic drag and opens at lower speeds to optimize engine-cooling airflow.
Another contributor to reduced drag is the use of ultra-low rolling resistance 17-inch Goodyear tires (used with lightweight wheels), which are also used on the Volt. As a result of the aero enhancements, aerodynamic drag was reduced by 10 percent over a non-Eco model, with a coefficient of drag of 0.298. That places Cruze at the top of the class for mainstream compact cars.
More than 42 changes were made on the Eco to reduce weight.
It weighs in at 3,009 pounds (1,365 kg), compared to the 3,223 pounds (1,462 kg) of the Cruze 1LT. The diet program for the Cruze challenged engineers to look at all aspects of the vehicle’s construction, including hundreds of weld flanges on the vehicle. They were reduced 1 mm to 2 mm in length, which saved several pounds, while the sheet metal gauge thickness was reduced by about 0.1 mm in select components.
This saved weight while preserving structural integrity. Lighter wheels and tires are used on the Eco. They’re stylish, polished 17-inch alloy units with Goodyear tires that weigh only 36.5 pounds (16.6 kg) apiece. That’s 5.3 pounds (2.4 kg) less than the 16-inch wheel/tires of the Cruze 1LT for a complete savings to the vehicle of 21.2 pound (9.6 kg).
Cruze Eco is powered by power-dense Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine and a standard six-speed manual transmission. The transmission’s gearing is optimized for the model’s specific 17-inch wheel/tire combination and includes aggressive ratios for first and second gear coupled with a highly efficient, “taller” sixth-gear ratio for highway driving. That means engine rpm is reduced on the highway, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.
A six-speed automatic transmission is available, with EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 26 city and 37 highway.
The Ecotec 1.4L turbo’s power ratings are 138 horsepower (103 kW) and 148 lb.-ft. of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 rpm and 4,900 rpm. The wide rpm range for the maximum torque – a specific trait of turbocharged engines – helps the engine deliver a better driving experience and performance. The turbocharger is integrated within the exhaust manifold, for reduced weight and greater packaging flexibility.
The engine also features premium design elements that give it world-class smoothness and durability while also contributing to the Cruze Eco’s lower curb weight. They include a cast iron block with a hollow frame structure, hollow-cast camshafts and a plastic intake manifold.
As a result of aerodynamic improvements, mass reduction and powertrain optimizaton, the Cruze Eco offers the best fuel economy in the compact segment, while delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the hybrid price.
Comparing the competitors
As a result of aerodynamic improvements, mass reduction and powertrain optimizaton, the Cruze Eco offers the best fuel economy in the compact segment, while delivering hybrid-like fuel economy without the hybrid price. The following charts show how it compares with primary competitors.
Chevrolet Cruze Eco 28 mpg 42 mpg Toyota Corolla 26 mpg 35 mpg Honda Civic 26 mpg 34 mpg Ford Focus 25 mpg 35 mpg Hyundai Elantra 26 mpg 35 mpg
