50 mpg Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Coming


General Motors has announced that the Chevrolet Cruze diesel version which will due in 2013 will be built at the Lordstown plant, Ohio.


The Chevrolet Cruze was the first General Motors’ diesel powertrain in more than 15 years. The Chevrolet Cruze diesel will be built side by side with gasoline powered Cruze.


General Motors will invest $5.5 million to expand the plant and to retool the body shop and general assembly line. The plant has been operating around the clock to build the gasoline engine version of the Cruze. The Cruze is one of the best selling cars of Chevrolet lineup.


The Chevrolet Cruze is already sold in Europe and Australia which features a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. Depending on the trim, the engine produces either 127 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque or 163 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.


Currently, the Chevrolet Cruze in the US features a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine and the premium 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. The engine allows the Cruze to run from 0 to 62 mpg in 10 seconds. The Cruze Eco fuel economy returns 42 mpg, while the Cruze diesel is expected to return 50 mpg highway.
