Rick Hendrick visits Oshawa Assembly Plant to celebrate start of 2012 Camaro ZL1 production

OSHAWA, Ontario – The Oshawa Assembly Plant today celebrated the start of regular production of the hotly-anticipated 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in a ceremony with employees and invited guests, including team owner Rick Hendrick.

“This is an exciting new chapter in the ongoing revival of the tremendously popular Chevrolet Camaro,” said Kevin Williams, president and managing director of GM of Canada. “The new 2012 Camaro ZL1 is the most-powerful Camaro ever produced by Chevrolet and further demonstrates the flexible capabilities of the award-winning Oshawa Assembly Plant.”

“Through a disciplined approach and a relentless focus on execution, the Oshawa team has worked efficiently to ensure a successful, high-quality launch of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1,” stated Dan Hermer, plant manager at the Oshawa Assembly Plant. “New product mandates like the Camaro ZL1 are testaments to the calibre of the workforce in Oshawa,” added Chris Buckley, president of the Canadian Auto Workers Local 222

Employees were joined by Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, to celebrate the start of regular production. Hendrick, a Camaro enthusiast who purchased the first 2010 Camaro Coupe and the first 2011 Camaro Convertible, now also has purchased the first Camaro ZL1 available for public sale. In all three cases, Hendrick acquired the purchase rights through the Barrett-Jackson auction, with all proceeds benefitting local charities.

“I had the opportunity to visit the plant last January when they started production of the 2011 Camaro Convertible,” said Hendrick, who has a record 10 car owner championships in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. “As a Chevy enthusiast, it’s an honor to spend time at such an impressive facility and meet the people who produce some of world’s most incredible high-performance cars. They’ve raised the bar again with the new Camaro ZL1, and I’m excited to be back in Oshawa to experience it firsthand.”

The reintroduction of the ZL1 to the Camaro lineup not only acknowledges a unique period in Camaro’s first generation, but a new high performance benchmark for the fifth generation Camaro.

The heart of the Camaro ZL1 is a supercharged 6.2L engine, SAE-rated at 580 horsepower (432 kW) and 556 lb.-ft. of torque (754 Nm) – making it the most-powerful production Camaro ever. The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 96 km/h in 3.9 seconds and can reach a top speed of 297 km/h.

The first retail production Camaro ZL1 features a black exterior with the optional Exposed Carbon Fiber Weave Hood Insert and power Sunroof. The interior is black leather with sueded microfiber inserts not only on the seat and dash, but also the steering wheel and shift knob.

2013 Malibu On The Way To Chevy Dealerahips

The first shipments of the all new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu just left the factory and are on trucks headed to Chevy dealership throughout the States.

One of the objectives General Motors had with the new 2013 Malibu was to beat the 2013 Ford Fusion to dealerships, which are scheduled to arrive late summer or early fall.

Initial Malibu models will be the Malibu ECO, which feature’s GM’s eAssist. Power will come from a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. It’s supplemented by a 15-hp electric motor that provides added power during acceleration. The eAssist system also captures energy while braking and restarts the engine during eco start/stop.

The Fairfax plant has produced more than 1.4 million Malibus since 2003. It operates three shifts and has more than 4,000 employees, making it the largest manufacturing employer in the Kansas City area, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

Chevrolet Returns To Number One In 2011 Passenger Car Sales

Chevrolet posted its best annual retail sales increase in 35 years. Fueled by the wildly successful sales of the Cruze compact sedan, sales of Chevrolet compact cars nearly doubled over 2010.

"Leading the U.S. industry in passenger car sales in our centennial year proves that we have transformed the Chevrolet product lineup and are delivering the high-quality, fuel-efficient, expressively designed cars that more and more people want,” said Alan Batey, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “We are confident we can continue to build on the momentum with the new Sonic and the new Malibu Eco arriving in dealer showrooms in the coming weeks,” Batey added.

U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Cruze totaled 231,732 last year. As the best-selling Chevrolet nameplate, the Cruze has sold over 1 million units in the three short years since it’s launch.

Another fact contributing to Chevrolet’s sales jump is the the Chevrolet Silverado pickup as the second best selling vehicle in the U.S. with over 415,130 sold, a 12.2 percent jump from 2011.

The all-new Sonic posted a 52 percent jump up and over the vehicle it replaced and the refreshed fifth-generation Camaro racked up sales of 88,000, up 8 percent from last year.

A Chevrolet Is Sold Somewhere In The World Every 6.6 Seconds

After celebrating its 100th birthday in November, Chevrolet is on track to set an all-time global sale record in 2011, having sold 4.8 million units through the end of November.

According to Russ Clark, Chevrolet's marketing manager for mid-sized and performance cars, "Chevrolet's market share around the world has increased by nearly one half of a point this year, as it also steadily advances a goal of becoming a global brand."

One in five Chevrolets are sold in Latin America, where it the number-one brand with a market share of 18.7 percent, while Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Columbia are all now growing markets for Chevrolet products from passenger cars to trucks and sport utility vehicles.

Sales of Chevrolet passenger cars have meanwhile climbed 34 percent in recent months thanks to the overhaul of its passenger cars, with the Chevrolet Cruze as the best selling compact car in the US, while sales of the Malibu have surpassed those of 2010.

Additionally, both the Corvette and Camaro, which has bested Mustang for the second year in a row, are now tops in their respective segments, Clark noted, while the all-new subcompact Chevrolet Sonic is turning so fast dealers have only a 17-day supply on their lots.

While Jeff Gordon, as well as the rest of his NASCAR colleagues, may be enjoying Christmas with family and friends, his sponsor, the AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger campaign, is taking no holiday.

“An estimated 8.8 million Americans, 50 and older, are at risk of hunger, including 4.9 million 50- to 59-year olds,” AARP Foundation President Jo Ann Jenkins said. “The holiday season is here but there is no off-season in the fight to help people facing hunger.”

Earlier this year, AARP became NASCAR’s first cause-based primary sponsor, featuring its Drive to End Hunger on Jeff Gordon’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. The primary purpose of the sponsorship is to not only raise the visibility of the issue of hunger, but also to raise cash and donations in NASCAR venues throughout the country.

“We have just really enjoyed a wonderful working relationship with Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports as part of our entrée into the NASCAR world,” Jenkins said. “When we really thought about putting this whole campaign together, we said we didn’t want to have partners who didn’t really believe in solving the issue of hunger in this country.”

“I really believe that we can make a sizable dent in solving this issue, especially for those who are 50 years or older and vulnerable,” Jenkins continued. “So, we entered into this relationship with Jeff and agreed that it was going to be the Drive to End Hunger car because it really was going to be all about ending hunger. And all of the proceeds were going to go to helping this issue.”

Being new to the NASCAR scene, Jenkins admitted that AARP were tremendously fortunate to partner with one of the sport’s biggest names.

“It didn’t hurt that Jeff has won a number of races and that he is the eighth most popular sports figure in this country,” Jenkins said. “He has really embraced this whole cause, doing it not only when we ask him to but when he is talking about his own charities. So, it’s really worked out well for us.”

The other surprise for the AARP Foundation has been the success of not only raising awareness of the issue of hunger, but also raising dollars that turn immediately into food for those in need. The most overwhelming aspect of the Foundation sponsorship, however, has been learning just how generous NASCAR fans really are.

“Our goal for this year was to raise awareness and to raise funds,” Jenkins said. “We have tried to gear our awareness campaign to help local nonprofits and soup kitchens get what they need to solve this issue.”

“So far this year, we have raised over $14 million in commitments, in cash, donations or multi-year commitments from corporations,” Jenkins continued. “Almost 25% of that has come from individual donor contributions which is amazing.”

“We’ve reached over 123,000 NASCAR fans at our interactive tents at races around the country,” Jenkins said. “Almost 32 million people have been engaged with us in some sort of social media. So, we couldn’t be more happy with the results.”

“This was our first entrée into the sport and it has exceeded any of our expectations,” Jenkins continued. “The NASCAR fans really understand the issue of hunger and have embraced that.”

“The first thing they ask is how they can help,” Jenkins said. “Individuals really can make a contribution to ending hunger and I think we’ve hit it out of the ball park with our work with NASCAR and Jeff Gordon.”

Now that the first season for the AARP Foundation’s Drive to End Hunger campaign is in the books, the AARP Foundation is looking forward to seeing what next year has in store for their partnership with Jeff Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports.

“We’re excited about the 2012 racing season and we’re putting the plans in place as to how we can continue to do what we’ve done in 2011 but engage even more people at the tracks on our platform next year,” Jenkins said. “We’re going to try a number of fundraising events at the tracks and we’re also going to be working with our AARP State offices, getting them to engage in hunger campaigns.”

“We’re also expanding our partnerships with other nonprofits,” Jenkins continued. “Today we signed off on eight to ten innovation grants going to other nonprofits who think they have a sustainable solution to solving the issue of hunger.”

“Our goal is to amplify the work of nonprofits and the community in solving the issue of hunger.”
Although the 2012 season is right around the corner, the AARP Foundation is working especially hard over the Christmas break and off-season to ensure that all NASCAR fans understand that hunger takes no holiday.

“We are working right now on keeping the message alive,” Jenkins said. “We’re updating our Drive to End Hunger website on a daily basis.”

“We’re pushing out a new YouTube channel focused on Drive to End Hunger,” Jenkins continued. “We’re engaged in a pilot program in Georgia to simplify the SNAP application for Food Stamps, especially for the senior population.”

“There isn’t much of an off-season with NASCAR but we’re already engaged with Jeff and the folks at Hendrick with what we’re going to be doing starting early February to kick off the season,” Jenkins said. “We’re excited about it.”

The message of the AARP Foundation for the holidays is simple.
“The good thing about this Drive to End Hunger campaign is that each person can make a difference,” Jenkins said. “We know that if we give $1 to a local food bank, they can turn that into $7 in food by purchasing in bulk.”

“In this holiday season, when so many are in need, people really can make a difference.”

50 mpg Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Coming

General Motors has announced that the Chevrolet Cruze diesel version which will due in 2013 will be built at the Lordstown plant, Ohio.

The Chevrolet Cruze was the first General Motors’ diesel powertrain in more than 15 years. The Chevrolet Cruze diesel will be built side by side with gasoline powered Cruze.

General Motors will invest $5.5 million to expand the plant and to retool the body shop and general assembly line. The plant has been operating around the clock to build the gasoline engine version of the Cruze. The Cruze is one of the best selling cars of Chevrolet lineup.

The Chevrolet Cruze is already sold in Europe and Australia which features a 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. Depending on the trim, the engine produces either 127 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque or 163 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque.

Currently, the Chevrolet Cruze in the US features a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine and the premium 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. The engine allows the Cruze to run from 0 to 62 mpg in 10 seconds. The Cruze Eco fuel economy returns 42 mpg, while the Cruze diesel is expected to return 50 mpg highway.

If the Mecklenburg County Commissioners approved a resolution on Tuesday night, race fans will get to do just that on a stretch of Interstate 85 in Mecklenburg County.

Mecklenburg County has recently been approached by NASCAR to request that the N.C. Board of Transportation designate a portion of Interstate 85 as the "Jeff Gordon Expressway" for his 85th career Sprint Cup Series victory and his humanitarian efforts in Mecklenburg County and the State of North Carolina.

Lordstown Builds 300,000th Cruze

The General Motors Co. Lordstown Complex passed another milestone Thursday when the 300,000th Chevrolet Cruze rolled off the assembly line since production began in mid-July 2010 - and workers will work more overtime to keep up with demand.

The crystal claret - or deep reddish - car, which is headed for a Fort Worth, Tex., Chevrolet dealership, was built early Thursday morning on the third shift, complex spokesman Tom Mock said. "That's quite an accomplishment," he said of the production total.
He added production "is really accelerating." Three ovetime shifts are scheduled for Oct. 22, subject to change, he said.

The plant aims to build about 1,200 cars over three shifts each day.
Even with strong production, workers aim for high quality, a union leader said.
"Three hundred thousand is a large number, but our members know quality comes before quantity. Whether it's 300,000 or one million, we want to make sure they're done right," said Dave Green, president of United Auto Workers Local 1714 of the Lordstown West Metal Center.

Jim Graham, president of Local 1112 at the Lordstown East assembly plant, said the plant reached the 300,000 mark quickly because of three shifts, which were not always in effect when workers were building previous cars such as the Cobalt and Cavalier.

The Cruze, which has seen its field supply fall to 33 days at the current sales rate - about half of the 60 considered ideal - posted five straight months of 20,000 sales in the spring and summer.
It hit a high of 24,896 sales in June as rising gasoline prices made consumers more fuel-conscious. The car's highway miles per gallon is rated at 35 for the base LS automatic transmission to 42 for the manual transmission Eco model.

The complex, which employs about 4,500 hourly and salaried workers, has stepped up production, reaching 28,911 cars in August and 27,284 in September.

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco with manual transmission delivers an exceptional 42 miles per gallon on the highway. City mileage is 28 mpg. That means this not-a-diesel, uses-no-hydrogen and doesn’t-have-a-hybrid-battery-pack Chevy gets better fuel highway economy than the current Ford Fusion Hybrid, Nissan Altima Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid

The entire Cruze line looks and feels rich and well finished. Especially because the Cruze Eco version rides on a slightly lowered suspension (for aerodynamics) and has unique lightweight 17-inch aluminum wheels (for low rolling resistance), the highest-mileage Cruze is also one of the best-looking small Chevys.

The engine is a modern 138-horsepower Ecotec 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don’t let the turbo scare you, or the fact that the engine is only 85 cubic inches. Improved aerodynamics also enhance the Cruze’s mileage. While you can’t see them from the outside of the car, the Cruze Eco has shutters that open and close behind the grille. Sensors know when to shut them to reduce aerodynamic drag and add as much as one-quarter mpg. While that doesn’t sound like much, every little bit helps.

The fact that weight-saving efforts pulled 125 pounds out of the Cruze Eco (compared to a similarly equipped non-Eco mode) helps efficiency and the Cruze’s handling.

Designed to go head to head with the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus, when it comes to cabin and cargo space the Eco is the clear leader. A seeming small amount of extra space makes a noticeable difference in compact cars. General Motors Leads With Industry-First Front Center Airbag

The Chevrolet Cruze has 10 standard airbags and that was an industry first for a compact car. Today, General Motors adds another industry first, announcing it will introduce the first front center airbag on the 2013 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse crossovers.

The 2012 Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse are already tops in safety scores with five-star overall and side crash ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Top Safety Picks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Now, for 2013, they’ll be even safer.

What a front center airbag is and how it works

The front center airbag is an inflatable restraint that protects the driver and front passengers during far-side impact crashes. The airbag deploys from the right-hand side of the driver’s seat, positioning itself between the front-row seats near the vehicle’s center.

The airbag is a tethered tubular model, jointly developed over a three-year period by General Motors and technology supplier Takata. The front center airbag was designed to provide driver restraint during passenger-side crashes when the driver is the only occupant in the vehicle. It also acts as an energy-absorbing cushion between the driver and front passenger during both driver- and side-passenger crashes.

General Motors says the front center airbag is also expected to provide protection during rollovers.

Part of the motivation for designing the safety feature was GM’s analysis of the NHTSA’s fatality database which found that 29 percent of belted front occupant fatalities involved being struck on the opposite (far-side) of the vehicle.

In a GM press release, Scott Thomas, senior staff engineer of GM’s advanced restraint systems, said, “The front center air bag is not required by federal regulation, an no other air bag in passenger vehicles today offers the type of restraint and cushioning this air bag is designed to provide for front occupants.”

GM points out that this industry-first front center airbag is part of a comprehensive occupant restraint system. Maximum benefit will only be achieved if occupants wear their seat belts.

Hendrick Automotive Group to Help Fund Middle School Sports

A $250,000 sponsorship agreement with Hendrick Automotive Group will allow Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to offer a complete program of middle school sports for the 2011-12 academic year.

Due to budget cuts, CMS had expected to reduce the number of middle school sports offered in previous years. The Hendrick sponsorship, combined with a contribution from an unidentified donor, provides the remaining amount necessary to fund the full lineup of 13 sports at all 32 middle schools for more than 6,500 students participating in athletics across the district

“We believe that sports play a crucial role in students’ education and development,” said CMS interim superintendent Hugh Hattabaugh. “Hendrick Automotive Group’s generous support is a great example of how the support of local businesses can make an enormous difference in the lives of children.”

The sponsorship agreement designates HendrickCars.com as an official sponsor of CMS athletics, which offers opportunities for more than 16,000 middle and high school students.

The agreement gives the company naming rights of statistics announced during breaks at high school athletic events; recognition as a title partner in announcements at the end of high school events; and signage that will be displayed at middle and high school athletic events. CMS and Hendrick Automotive Group will explore options for additional promotions, and the arrangement will not change any existing partnership agreements between individual schools’ booster clubs and other organizations

CMS will use the sponsorship money to help pay coaching stipends, fees for officials and transportation costs for middle school athletics. Students must still pay some sports-participation fees, introduced by CMS for all middle and high school student-athletes last year.

Chevrolet's Future Products Focus On Cars And Increased Fuel Economy For 2012-2014 Model Years

Chevrolet will focus on cars -- at least for the next 18 months -- as GM's biggest brand continues to gain market share and increase production.

The next-generation Chevrolet Malibu mid-sized sedan will launch in early 2012. The Spark minicar will hit the United States later next year from South Korea.

The redesigned Impala large sedan is slated for the first quarter of 2013. Truck launches will follow. Redesigned versions of Chevy's Tahoe and Suburban SUVs are expected in the first half of 2013 as 2014 models. The next-generation Silverado pickup is scheduled to arrive later in 2013.

Here are highlights for Chevrolet's 2012-14 models.

Spark: The minicar's U.S. launch is set for mid-2012 as a 2013 model. It probably will get a 1.4-liter, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. It will be exported from South Korea, where GM builds the Spark's sister car, the five-door Daewoo Matiz hatchback.

Sonic: In August, production begins on Chevy's new subcompact car, which replaces the Aveo. The Sonic, built at GM's Orion Township assembly plant in suburban Detroit, will come as a five-door hatchback and four-door sedan. Forecasters expect U.S. production of 75,000 to 87,000 units.

Cruze: GM is boosting the fuel economy of some models and making more features standard as the 2012 Cruze goes on sale this month. The four-door compact is GM's best-selling U.S. car, with sales of 122,972 through the first half of 2011. A refresh is expected for the 2014 model year, when GM also could decide to offer a Cruze hatchback. Some media reports also say a diesel Cruze could come in two years.

Volt: The plug-in hybrid, after an initial launch in seven markets, will roll out to all states during the second half of 2011. GM forecasts production of 16,000 for 2011 and 60,000 in 2012. Only cosmetic changes are expected before 2014.

Malibu: A re-engineered, restyled version of the mid-sized sedan goes on sale in the first quarter of 2012 as a 2013 model. Chevy will launch with the Malibu Eco, the first Chevrolet to get GM's new eAssist mild hybrid technology, which will be offered with a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine. A new 2.5-liter will follow later in 2012.

Impala: For 2012, the Impala gets a new grille and a new 3.6-liter engine to replace the current choices of a 3.5- or 3.9-liter. A six-speed transmission will replace the outdated four-speed. A redesigned Impala is due in the first quarter of 2013 as a 2014 model. It will move to the longer version of GM's front-wheel-drive Epsilon platform, which also will underpin the upcoming Cadillac XTS sedan. An all-wheel-drive option is likely, as is a hybrid version, such as eAssist or possibly a plug-in.

Corvette: The next-generation Corvette will debut in the fall of 2013 as a 2014 model. A turbocharged V-6 is likely to join the V-8. The current version will be offered for 2012 and possibly an abbreviated 2013 model year.

Camaro: A redesign of the current Camaro, which was launched as a 2010 model, is due in mid- to late 2014 as a 2015 model. It will be switched to the rear-wheel-drive Alpha platform that will underpin the upcoming Cadillac ATS.

Equinox: The popular crossover will get a reskin for the 2013 model year. The addition of eAssist is a possibility for the 2014 model year.

Traverse: A reskin is planned for the crossover in the 2013 or 2014 model year, which should include extensive interior improvements. It also will get GM's new 3.0-liter V-6 engine, replacing the current 3.6-liter version.

Tahoe, Suburban: The redesigned SUVs are due in the first half of 2013 as 2014 models. They will remain on GM's large-truck platform, rather than moving to the Lambda crossover platform, as the company had considered. Powertrain enhancements probably will include an eight-speed transmission and could include the addition of GM's four-mode hybrid system. That is an upgrade of its current two-mode system, which uses planetary gears and electric motors to conserve fuel.

Silverado 1500: A re-engineered, restyled pickup is expected in the second half of 2013 as a 2014 model. GM is expected to use a number of powertrain features to boost fuel efficiency, including a likely six-cylinder turbocharged version and eight-speed transmission. GM also will use lighter-weight materials in an effort to gain a fuel-economy edge over rival Ford Motor Co.'s F-150, which was redesigned for the 2009 model year.

Silverado 2500, 3500: Restyled versions of the heavy-duty pickups, which were re-engineered for the 2011 model year, are expected in the 2014 or 2015 model year

Chevrolet Sells 2.35 Million Vehicles Globally, Best In 100-Year History

“Founded in the United States by a Swiss émigré, Chevrolet was created with a global focus,” said Joel Ewanick, GM global chief marketing officer. “One hundred years later, Louis Chevrolet’s roots continue to shape our company, and enable Chevrolet to offer great products and service to customers in more than 120 countries around the world. We will continue to work at bringing new customers to the Chevy family – no matter where they live.”

Chevrolet sold 286,499 more vehicles in the first half of 2011 than the same time period of 2010, a 14-percent increase year over year. In addition, Chevrolet set record first-half sales in many countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, France, South Africa, and Turkey.

For the first half of 2011, Chevrolet recorded sales gains in all of its top five markets, including:
The United States, where sales are up 16 percent following nine consecutive months of year-over-year sales increases.

- Brazil, where sales are up 0.4 percent over the best-ever-sales pace set in 2010
- China, where sales climbed 15 percent to set the brand’s best first-half results ever
- Russia, where sales were up 54 percent as the brand continues to be the best-selling global brand in the country
- Canada, where sales climbed 8 percent, and have more than doubled the pace of industry growth for the past 18 months

The potential for Chevrolet’s continued growth is demonstrated in the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia and China. Chevrolet’s combined sales strength in the “BRIC” countries, including India, is unmatched.

Much of Chevrolet’s global growth can be attributed to the wave of new models, such as the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, Spark mini car, all-new Aveo/Sonic small car, and Orlando MPV. They will soon be joined globally by the all-new Chevrolet Malibu midsize car, and the all-new Colorado compact pickup, which will go on sale later this year.

Chevrolet sold more than 330,000 Cruzes worldwide during the first half of 2011, a 132-percent increase over the same time period a year ago. Much of that growth came in China and the United States, where Cruze was the best-selling passenger car in the country in June. Since introduction in early 2009, Cruze has sold more than 800,000 units worldwide and is on track to exceed 1 million before the end of 2012.

“The success of the Cruze illustrates what is possible when you listen to your customers,” said Mary Barra, senior vice president, GM Global Product Development. “By offering drivers more than they expected in a compact car, the Cruze has redefined the global segment and is on track to bring a million new customers to Chevrolet. We are applying that same customer-focused approach to all of our global introductions, including Orlando, Colorado, Malibu, Spark, and Aveo/Sonic.”

Chevrolet sold more than 220,000 Spark minicars worldwide since it was introduced in December 2009. That includes more than 100,000 Sparks sold during the first half of 2011 – a 110 percent gain over a year ago – driven primarily by consumer demand in South Korea, Mexico, and Uzbekistan.

Chevrolet sold more than 150,000 Aveo compact cars in the first half of 2011, including the all-new Aveo, which will be called the Sonic in some markets. Introduced in South Korea in March, the new Aveo/Sonic is currently on sale in nearly 30 countries.

General Motors is planning to expand the widely popular Chevrolet Cruze in the U.S. by adding a diesel engine, which will rival the Toyota Prius gas-electric hybrid’s fuel consumption.

The diesel Cruze is expected to receive 50 miles per gallon on the highway and will help GM meet tightening government fuel economy standards. Chevrolet already has a diesel-engine Cruze that’s selling well in Australia, but it will not hit showrooms in the U.S. until at least 2013

As the U.S.’s top-selling car, Dave Sullivan, an analyst with AutoPacific commented, “I couldn’t think of a better way for GM to capitalize on the momentum that Cruze has created for GM by adding a diesel.” While diesel engines are slightly more expensive initial, American auto consumers are starting to see the benefits of these fuel efficient cars.

Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It's a day of picnics and patriotic parades, a night of concerts and fireworks, and a reason to fly the American flag.

During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia.

After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by a Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the Declaration, finally approving it on July 4, 1776.

In a remarkable coincidence, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration.

Chevrolet Cruze Improves Fuel Economy for 2012

2-mpg improvement and streamlined content builds on successful global launch

For 2012, Chevrolet Cruze models with the 1.4L turbo and six-speed automatic transmission will get 2 mpg better fuel economy. The Cruze Eco with an automatic transmission will deliver as much as 39 mpg on the highway compared with 37 mpg for the current model, Chevrolet said Wednesday.

The most popular 1.4L turbo/six-speed automatic will get 38 mpg compared with 36 mpg for the current model. A lower axle ratio for the 2012 models enables the approximately 5 percent increase in highway fuel efficiency for Cruze.

Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Also for 2012, a feature package containing Bluetooth phone connectivity, USB port, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and a leather-wrapped shift knob will be standard on 1LT and Eco models. These features were part of the $525 Connectivity Plus Cruise option package on 2011 models. The option was ordered by 90 percent of American customers.

“Chevrolet is committed to responding to what customers want and making it easier for them,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “Adding these previously optional features streamlines the ordering process and answers the call of what our customers told us should be standard.”

Cruze, which was the best-selling small car in the United States in May, is Chevrolet’s best-selling nameplate around the world, with global sales of more than 250,000 in the first four months of 2011.

“Fueled by a successful launch in the United States and continued growth in China, Chevrolet Cruze is proving to be the right car at the right time,” Scheidt said “Fuel economy is the top reason customers buy a compact and the Cruze’s greater efficiency for 2012 makes it all the more attractive.”

General Motors CEO Dan Akerson Predicts 'Amazing' Future

The future of General Motors Co. -- the new GM -- will be, in a word, "amazing," GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson told the company's shareholders during its 2011 annual meeting Tuesday morning.

Acknowledging that the largest American automaker almost made history by "not making a future," Akerson told shareholders the new GM has made significant progress and monumental changes in how it operates since emerging from Chapter 11.

The problems that almost put the company out of business, he noted, were decades in the making. Fifty years ago, company executives were focused on things that seem trivial today -- how large the fins on a new 1961 model would be or how to squeeze 50 more horsepower into an engine.

History suggests that they were not focused on the things that would eventually pose serious threats to the company, Akerson said. Things such as brand amalgamation, an evermore crowded marketplace and competition from around the world, more stringent environmental regulations that impact how vehicles operate as well as how they are produced, demand for greater fuel efficiency, the rapid pace of technological innovation and the need to remain on the cutting edge.

Today, having learned from experience, Akerson said GM has refocused its energies and made important changes in how it operates. It is a daunting task, he acknowledged, "but we are invigorated by the challenges." Emerging from bankruptcy was not just a second chance, he said, "but a rebirth.

"No one is doing a victory lap, we still have a lot to do," he cautioned, referring to the undertaking as a "massive turnaround." But, there are "many factors in our favor."

Among the most important changes is the company's ability to turn a profit on both its top-end luxury vehicles, SUVs and trucks and its base models, i.e. affordably priced small cars that appeal to the masses. That is possible Akerson explained, because GM is producing vehicles that customers want, cars such as the Lordstown, Ohio-built Chevrolet Cruze, the top-selling compact car in America just five months after it was introduced, and the Chevrolet Volt, the first extended-range electric in the market. "These are the right vehicles at the right time in our history," he asserted.

Referring to the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Sonic, one displayed to his left, the other to his right on the stage inside the historic Fisher Building where the annual meeting took place, Akerson said that this is the "ideal time" to launch such vehicles.

Both cars were unveiled during the North American International Auto Show in January and will roll into dealer showrooms in coming months. The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is small, fuel-efficient model that offers the athletic ride and agility of a sports car. The Verano is Buick's first compact luxury sedan.

Because these vehicles are what consumers want, and have all of the comforts and amenities that they want, the automaker is able to charge a premium price, driving up profits, Akerson told shareholders. And, he said, "This is just the tip of the iceberg of what is to come.

"The new GM is building momentum. The company is experiencing solid growth, gaining market share, boosting profits and reducing liabilities, Akerson said. It has added 9,000 jobs in the United States since emerging from bankruptcy, reduced the complexity in how it operates and has achieved this despite shedding some of its brands, a drastic move, he says, that worried him and his colleagues.

Akerson told his audience that the company has also introduced an exercise he refers to as "tough love."During these tough-love sessions, he explained, GM executives work in groups identifying the company's vulnerabilities and imagining how, if they were a competitor, they could best attack those vulnerabilities. "It was very enlightening," Akerson observed. "I learned a lot." The goal, he said, is for GM to address its own vulnerabilities before its competitors identify them.

GM's future, he continued, stretches far beyond the borders of the United States. Chevrolet, he happily reported, is among the five most recognizable automotive brands in the world. In the BRIC [Brazil, Russia, India and China] countries, GM dominates the market and anticipates rapid growth, Akerson continued. By 2015, the said GM expects to sell 12 million vehicles there.

There are, however, still many challenges. While the company has "made great strides in Europe, there is still much to do," Akerson said. There is also still much work to be done to fund the company's pension liabilities.

While challenges remain, Akerson said he is confident the new GM is on the right path, anticipating changes in the market better than ever before and focusing on what consumers want. "We have a new attitude," he said. "We expect to win. We strive to win and that's what this company and its leadership is about."

Specially Adapted Vehicle Presented To Injured Marine

On Thursday May 12, 2011 a specially adapted vehicle was presented to Marine Corps Staff Sergeant (SSgt) Samuel Schoenheit, at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet in Wilmington.

SSgt Schoenheit was injured on June 26, 2008 during a firefight in Heart Province, Afghanistan. During an intense battle, SSgt Schoenheit was critically injured when he was shot in the head as his convoy came under heavy attack. His injuries left him paralyzed on his right side but after years of therapy Samuel has regained enough functionality to qualify to drive a specially adapted vehicle.

The vehicle was made possible by funding provided by the Semper Fi Fund, For the Fallen, Sentinels of Freedom and the Veterans Administration.

The Semper Fi Fund helps fund specially adapted vehicles through its Adaptive Transportation grants. These grants are provided to service members who have lost limbs or are paralyzed as a result of their injuries. Modified transportation is a vital component to a successful rehabilitation for someone who is severely injured. It is key to ensuring that appointments and therapies are easily attended, and more freedom of mobility is given to the injured and their families.

Typically, a modified vehicle can cost upwards of $40,000. After the VA loan is applied to a handicap vehicle, the Semper Fi Fund will provide a grant of up to $20,000, depending on needs, to reduce and often eliminate the financial burden of a car payment. As of March 31, 2011, the Semper Fi Fund has provided close to 1,500 grants totaling $4.9 million towards the costs of purchasing or modifying specially adapted vehicles.

The Semper Fi Fund (SFF) (http://www.semperfifund.org/) is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions for Marines and Sailors, as well as members of the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard who serve in support of Marine forces, when they become injured in post 9-11 combat or training operations, or they face life threatening illness or injury.

Our fund provides relief to qualified Servicemembers and their families for immediate financial needs that arise during hospitalization and recovery, as well as perpetuating needs such as home modifications, customized transportation and specialized equipment. SFF has awarded more than 26,000 financial grants totaling more than $48,000,000.00!

Do You Know What the Codes on Your Tires Mean?

Example Tire Sidewall Markings: P215/65R 15 95H M+S

- First up is a letter or letters, indicating the tire’s purpose: “P” for passenger cars or “LT” for light trucks are the most likely letters you’ll see.
- Next is a three-digit number. This is the tire’s width (in millimeters) from sidewall edge to sidewall edge.
- Then, a two-digit number which is the tire’s aspect ratio, or the ratio of height to width. The smaller the number, the shorter the sidewall.
- Next, a letter, probably “R,” which indicates radial construction. Almost every tire you encounter will be a radial nowadays, unless you’re buying tires for a classic car.
- Then, another two-digit number, which is the diameter of the wheel that the tire is intended to fit.
- Next, an optional two- or three-digit number. This is the tire’s load index number, and its inclusion is not required by law. The load index number corresponds with the tire’s load-carrying capacity. Simply put, don’t install a tire with a lower load index number than your manufacturer recommends.
- Next, a letter. This is the tire’s speed rating. Follow your manufacturer’s recommendation. You should only need to upgrade to a higher speed rating if you have modified your vehicle for track use, or if you are heading to Germany to drive on the Autobahn.
- Next, some more letters, usually “M+S” or “M/S.” This stands for mud and snow, and applies to most radial tires sold in America.

There are more numbers and letters, most of which you don’t really need to worry about unless your tires are subject to a recall. They refer to the tire’s place and date of manufacture, the maximum inflation pressure, maximum load rating, composition, materials, tread wear, traction and temperature grades. Diving deeply into these ratings will yield a trove of information – most of which differs from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The next time you shop for tires, you’ll understand what all those letters and numbers mean.

The Cruze Is Hitting On All Cylinders As March Cruze Sales Exceed 18,000

Cruze sales totaled 18,018 in March and General Motors said Chevy Cruze sales exceeded 50,000 during the first quarter of 2011.

Fueled by over 18,000 vehicles shipped to dealers last month, the Lordstown, Ohio -built upscale compact vehicle surged to the top of the GM car chart in the first quarter of the year at 50,205, the automaker said Friday

The total paled next to the 92,445 sales posted by Chevy's Silverado 1500 pickup truck, but it returned the Lordstown Ohio Complex to its glory days of producing GM's top-selling car after years of trailing the fullsize Chevrolet Impala and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The Impala was a close second in sales for the quarter at 49,541, while the Malibu was third at 48,745, but the Cruze is expected to be Chevy's top seller by year's end, Don Johnson, GM's vice president of U.S. sales, said on a conference call.

About half of Cruze sales in March were "conquest" sales - luring buyers from competing models, such as perennial segment leaders Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic, GM said. "The Cruze is helping us keep customers and bring in new ones," Johnson said.

The Cruze also sold better than the Cobalt in California and other states where GM normally finds it hard to win small-car buyers, Chevrolet Vice President of Sales and Service Alan Batey said.

In addition, Cruze sales came at an average transaction price close to $19,000, which was $2,000 above the Civic and $3,000 above the Corolla, Batey said. "That tells you customers are putting more options in the vehicle," Johnson said.

Johnson credited the Cruze for helping GM double its share to 11.4 percent from 5.7 percent of the compact car market, which he called the fastest-growing segment. "With oil hovering around $105 (a barrel,) we see a bit of a shift to compact cars," he said, adding the higher oil price isn't causing customers to delay purchases. "We think the economy will stay on its current course of slow, steady recovery."

The Lordstown Ohio Complex, which launched the Cruze Sept. 8 as GM's brightest hope hit a new production high for the car of 26,353 units. It built 22,618 in February and 22,314 in January.

All-New 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Set for Global Premiere At Jeff Gordon Chevrolet

The all-new Malibu will transcend time zones and embrace the diversity of cultures around the world when Chevrolet simultaneously unveils it live at the Shanghai Auto Show and on Chevrolet’s Facebook page.

Chevrolet provided a sneak peak glimpse today of its Malibu show car. Chevrolet will unveil the new Malibu live starting at 8:30 p.m. EDT on April 18 at http://www.facebook.com/chevrolet.

The Web reveal will also be streamed live at Jeff Gordon Chevrolet and on iPad and iPhone mobile devices.

Consumers are encouraged to post questions during the reveal on Twitter using #MalibuReveal or on Chevrolet’s Facebook page in the Malibu tab. Members of the Chevrolet team will be on hand to answer questions during a live moderated question-and-answer session following the web reveal.

The timing of the Web reveal coincides with the April 19 auto show debut of the new Malibu in Shanghai. The Malibu show car will also be shown at the New York International Auto Show, which is open to the public April 23 through May 1.

“This Malibu takes Chevrolet’s established and award-winning nameplate to new places and introduces it to new audiences around the world,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet. “Whether the Malibu is sold in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, or Australia, it has been engineered from the ground up to meet the needs of customers around the world.” The Malibu will feature a global family of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines, along with six-speed transmissions that also contribute to efficient performance.

The Malibu was designed to stand out in all markets around the globe, while its European-inspired driving characteristics were engineered to challenge the best in its class. The new Malibu is Chevrolet’s first midsize car to be sold globally. It will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents and built in multiple locations, including China and two facilities in the United States.
